Whimsical Woodland Nursery Reveal

8 Aug

As promised, here is the now finally complete nursery (of my dreams); a vintage, whimsical woodland-themed baby girl room!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I have not decided where to put the “HOPE” banner yet, so for right now it will stay on the crib. Perhaps forever, because I love it so much. Thanks to Casey for making it for us!

Here is a view from the door:

The rug is from One Kings Lane. I had to keep an eye out for a few weeks to catch a good sale. Although the advertisement said it was “very soft,” and it is definitely not. Oh well!

This is the wall opposite the crib. We wanted a changing table that we could re-use in the future, so we found this great desk at Queen of Hearts  in Roswell, GA.  We snagged it for just less than $300, which made it our biggest baby purchase. I got a few of the trinket decorations there as well. Tip: use cash for a 15% discount! The glider was my up-cycled Goodwill find that you can read about here.  And, if you can tell, the baskets in the lower half contain cloth diapers! We are going for it, people! 🙂 We chose the Dekor plus diaper pale because it had cloth diaper liners so I can just grab & go for the laundry.

The pups love spending time in her room!

Here is an up-close of the changing table. The shelves have been great for lotions, diaper rash cream, formula, and bottles for the middle of the night feeding.

The nursery weight, framed owl, ceramic bunny & birds, and white metal tray are from Queen of Hearts. The stuffed bear & cardboard woodland animals are from Sugarboo & Co.. The stuffed rabbit was a special daddy gift that Jon bought from Pink & Navy boutique while we were vacationing in AMI.  The button “C” was a handmade wedding gift from my good friend, Kylie, and I thought it fit so perfectly here! The green bear and cat frame were from my childhood, cause you have to have a little nostalgia thrown in there! 🙂 As you can see, the cloth diaper inserts are all folded and ready to go on the top shelf!

IMG_4093

This is our little sitting corner. I wanted to have two chairs in the nursery because Jon & I love to sit with Colette together. The frames I got from TJ Maxx, so I think we spent about $25 total on them. The pictures are actually postcards from Sugarboo & Co. I can’t afford her actual artwork right now, so the postcards will do just fine! 🙂 I made the crocheted pillow cover several years ago, and I am so glad it has a home now because that sucker took me a long time to make!

IMG_2425

I found this lil gem at Goodwill… a quilt rack already painted the perfect color! I made the crocheted tag-along blanket. It has been a staple gift for others when I want to give something special, and its a lot more portable than a huge blanket. I also made the crocheted blanket in the basket while we were on our way to meet the birthmother. I love to crochet…

The basket now holds all lovies and swaddles for easy access. The quilt was one I found at Queen of Hearts that I initially planned on turning into bedding, but we have a quilt coming from my mother-in-law that I’m really excited about so it will probably just become decoration or a play mat of sorts.

IMG_4083

Here is our amazing window… I love the natural light! And we were so fortunate to have the window treatments left by the previous owners. They are Pottery Barn curtains with blackout curtains behind them. 4 panels each, so it can get really good & dark in there! It also does a great job keeping out the heat in the evening because the sun hits the front of our house directly. I got the giant fabric basket on clearance at TJ Maxx for $16 (woohoo!), and the colors are perfect. It will be her toy chest for now, and it served as a clothes hamper while we were out of town to get her.

IMG_4087

This is the wall opposite the window where all the doors are. Couldn’t do too much with it, but I got this great little table at Goodwill for $12, and its a perfect stopping point for my diaper bag! I got the metal rabbit wall hangings at Queen of Hearts for just $4 a piece. And the adoption artwork is Glory Haus that I bought from another favorite local gift shop, Elle B Gifts.

This diaper bag was another steal… Jon and I went to Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, AL several years ago. They also carry unclaimed shipments to stores, and they had this Kate Spade bag with the tags on it and everything for $60. So I grabbed it (should have bought the second one there as a gift for someone), and it has been sitting in my closet waiting for an adoption to be used. The baby book is Welcome, Baby!, and it is the perfect baby book for actually filling out. Not too involved, and super cute! Then of course, the book that is completely running my life (in a good way), Moms on Call.  These ladies know what they are talking about, and they love The Lord. It’s the best combo… and Colette has been thriving on their schedule!

IMG_4080

This is my pride & joy… the centerpiece of the nursery decor, and really what I molded the rest of the room after.

The artwork is another Sugarboo & Co piece. She is our favorite artist, and out of Roswell, but we don’t exactly have the budget to purchase pieces of art right now. We were so fortunate that she did a line for Target this summer. It was not extensive at all, but this was one of the pieces, and at $30 it was a much more attainable price. And we had a gift card! 🙂 Could the saying be more perfect?! I think not!

The fabric strips are a garland that I made out of fabric I already had that coordinated with the room colors. Total cost was probably less than $10 in fabric. But I already had it, so it felt free! 🙂 I’ll post a tutorial on the garland later on. The tulle balls and felt garland were from The Farmhouse in Downtown Duluth. Love that store, and the people that run it!

So there you have it! My dream Whimsical Woodland Nursery 🙂 Its one of the few places where I felt like everything came together as I had hoped. Thank you, Pinterest 😉

Introducing…..

~ Colette Hope ~

Colette Newborn 018

After 17 days away, we got to bring our little peach fuzz baby girl home! She is more than we could have ever hoped for!  It has been a long 4 years since Jon and I decided to try to start a family. We would do it all over again for her.

Colette Newborn 149

We chose her name, Colette Hope, because it means Victory & Hope. It represents the victory and hope we have in Christ. He alone has sustained us through the roller coaster that is the adoption process -and really life in general. He has taught us that He is here, He is able, and He is good. We learned that even if He never brought a baby into our home, He is enough. So we wanted to give her a name that reminds her (and us) of what is most important – Christ alone. To Him be the glory for this good and perfect gift, Colette Hope!

Thank you to everyone who has prayed for us, and for her. It has meant more to us than you will ever know! christerson-sig

A Low Country Wobble

29 Jun

We drove back home from our beautiful vacation, said hello to our pups, and headed to a party thrown for us by some of our dearest friends! Talk about a great welcome home!

These folks are the ones that have seen us in every walk of life, and have been the living breathing body of Christ to us in our darkest days and our lightest! We have all cried, laughed, vacationed, prayed, and lived life together over the last 5 years. We love them and their kids like they were bone of our bones!

And a celebration it was… music, laughing, a low country boil (which is my all time favorite meal), delicious dessert, beautiful & thoughtful gifts, but most of all – fantastic company! It was a priceless evening that we will never forget!

One Last Fling before the… Baby!

28 Jun

Jon’s family takes us on a wonderful beach vacation once a year. This one was planned long before we knew we would be adopting a baby this summer! We took the opportunity to relax on the beach one last time before having to getting to think about a little life 24/7!

Here are some highlights!

Small Group Baby Party!!

27 Jun

When God talks about the body of Christ, sometimes I just imagine my church family. It’s truly amazing the amount of prayerful support, financial support, and emotional support we have received over the past few years. And then they throw a party for us on top of it all!! Crazy town! 🙂

I was having so much fun that I neglected to take many pictures, unfortunately… But here’s what I have!

Also, a big thanks to special guests Dale & Anne! Brad’s parents were in town to visit, and gave us a very sweet gift and spent the evening with us! Love all y’all!! I couldn’t be happier to be raising kids alongside these people…

Sister Shower!

Welcome to our first baby shower! :)

Welcome to our first baby shower! 🙂

My sisters and sisters-in-law threw us the most beautiful shower! I am not much for the mainstream girly decor. My sister-in-law, Lindsay, knows this well. She created a beautiful atmosphere of pinwheels, banners, and paper circles. Complete with mimosas, it was not your typical baby shower. 🙂

DIY Glider Cover

24 Jun

So I talked about how we’ve been doing a little nesting… One thing that became quite clear early on was how quickly nesting can become super expensive. I knew I wanted a glider, but when I saw the glider price tags, I had some second thoughts. SO, we did what we normally do, and headed on over to the local Goodwill to see what we could find for a fraction of retail price.

And TADA! Here she was in her $25 glory, the perfect glider…

Before... needs a lil tune up

Before… needs a lil tune up

The first thing I wanted to do was recover it, so I waited for a 50% off fabric coupon at Joann to grace my mailbox. It only took a week! I also needed a cushion for the bottom.

I could not find a good DIY tutorial online, so I decided to wing it and then make my own for all you glider coverers out there! 😉

Here is a list of supplies needed:

  • Goodwill glider
  • Home decor fabric (you want something that will stand the wear, so normal fabric won’t really cut it)
  • Matching thread, one spool should do the trick
  • High density foam (if you need to add a cushion)
  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins (and lots of them!)
  • Zipper (optional, and I wont be posting my zipper-insertion steps here. I really didnt know what I was doing, and I’m sure there are better tutorials out there!)
  • Large sewing needle (for the buttons)

I honestly don’t remember how much fabric it was, but I want to say it was under 3 yards. I just took the cushion in and told them I needed enough to cover it. Also, be sure to get high density foam, or your bum will feel the bottom of the glider.

suppliesReady?!

Place your cushion on the right side of the fabric, with enough fabric to the side to fold over the top of the cushion like a taco.

step 1

Pin it up!

Pin it up!

While it's still in the fabric, Fold like this to get it out

While it’s still in the fabric, fold the cushion like this to get it out

Next, sew around the pinned area with about 1/4 inch seam allowance so it doesn’t rip open when you use it! Also, be sure to leave about an inch open on the middle of either side for the tie-backs

Here is where I ran into a little snafu… I tote around my sewing machine a lot, and without a case. Apparently, in the last car ride, this happened:

A tragic discovery, the spool holder has broken off

Nothin a little hot glue can't handle!

Good as new!

After I fixed the little hiccup, I moved on to darting…

This is so the fabric on the inside doesn't bunch up and look ugly

This is so the fabric on the inside doesn’t bunch up and look ugly

After the big piece was all darted up, I moved on to the tie backs. This is probably the easiest part. I didn’t focus too much at all on making them perfectly straight since they would be tied in a bow all the time.

Cut a piece of fabric about a foot and a half long and about 6 inches wide. I just doubled the length of the tie backs I cut off the cushion. And my piece wasn’t the same width everywhere (hence the not being too focussed on perfection).

The old tie backs are a loose template

Sew 1/4 on each side

Fold and sew together!

Fold and sew together!

Once the tie backs are made (you’ll need to make 2), it’s time to insert them into the large cushion piece! Fold the tie back in half longways, and insert the two ends into the 1 inch space you left open on the side. With only about a half inch outside the border, stitch over the tie back with a zigzag stitch to hold in in securely.

Notice the thicker stitch!

Notice the thicker stitch!

Now it’s time to turn the cushion piece inside out, and reinsert the cushion! This is where I put a zipper at the bottom (again, see another tutorial for this), but you can also just sew it up!

Do the same thing with this cushion as the last one.

Do the same thing with this cushion as the last one.

The final touch for this glider was to insert the buttons! Grab your large sewing needle and some thread! I just wove thread through the button and then the whole cushion to the opposite side and another button. This is also why it was pointless for me to do a zipper closer, because I sewed the buttons all the way through the cushion. Oh well!

Sewing buttons, I used heaver thread her, but you don't have to.

And DONE!

AFTER! Love it so much more!

AFTER! Love it so much more!

Total cost was around $60. MUCH better than the $400 gliders I found in the store. Now, mine does not have the footstool, but I have seen them at Goodwill since then, and with the stool they were going for $35. I don’t mind not having the stool though. I added the pillow from Farmhouse Gifts, one of my favorite stores! It’s also handmade, so I think it fits nicely! 🙂

I hope this was helpful! Happy DIYing!

Nesting

24 Jun

Well it’s been a while since we last posted, and it’s been full of all the emotions you would expect!! Excitement, fear, joy, compassion, anxiety, stress, love…. God has been teaching us me (Jessica) a lot about His control and not my own. In that we are learning to trust Him for everything, not just our future children. I am often reminded of the verse that was read at our wedding…

“We wait in hope for the Lord. He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice for we trust in His holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Psalms 33:20-22

In trusting Him, we decided to get our little nest ready for this little girl! My Aunt & Uncle surprised us with the generous gift of a crib & mattress, so we put it up! It was the first of many projects for this little nugget! 🙂

The finished product!

The finished product!

We were really excited to get this in the nursery.  It made the room feel more complete.

The HOPE banner was a handmade gift from a dear friend, Casey. It represents everything that we have been holding onto this adoption journey… the hope we have in Christ to sustain us through everything that we go through in life. He alone is able!

The picture inside the crib is a piece from Sugarboo & Co., one of our favorite artists! It will hang over the crib with a few other things like fabric garland and tulle balls. I’m really excited to get that done!

The little yellow quilt to the left of the crib was my very first completed quilt project! Its about big enough to lay in her lap while she’s in the carseat, but I made that thing!

We’ll post a full nursery exposé soon! 🙂

My sister-in-law posted this article on Facebook this morning. It was a good read for me. The best thing about it is knowing that we follow a good & loving God. And perfect love casts out fear.
